10 Unforgettable Couplets By Sahir Ludhianvi That Are Still Alive In Our Hearts

BDC News

Irrfan Khan just cannot wait to play legendary poet Sahir Ludhianvi! The biopic will go on into shooting soon and our favorite actor has been prepping hard to get into character for nearly two and a half years. We hear Irrfan keeps Sahir’s lyrics handy on his I-Pod and doesn’t miss out on reading about the poet’s life whenever he gets time. And if Sanjay Leela Bhansali is co-producing it, we can expect it to be a lavish affair. The film will trace the love story between Sahir and writer Amrita Pritam. Adding to the excitement will be Priyanka Chopra who might play Amrita’s part. Can we expect the two to create the same magic of 7 Khoon Maaf this time around?
“Ever since I learned about a film being planned on Sahir and Amrita Pritam’s love story, I wondered why they were not coming to me with it. They did after a month. It’s the role I have been waiting for for a long time. It is well-researched and beautifully written. I can’t wait to immerse myself into the character.” – Irrfan Khan
While we wait for the film to reveal the story of Sahir Ludhianvi, here are some facts about his life.

1. Sahir was an Indian poet and film lyricist.

economic times
Born in undivided Punjab, he wrote in the Hindi and Urdu languages. While his real name was Abdul Hayee, he was better known by his pen name Sahir. His work majorly influenced Indian cinema. Sahir won a Filmfare Best Lyricist Award for Taj Mahal (1963) and Kabhie Kabhie (1976). He was honored with the Padma Shri in 1971. In March 2013, on the 92nd birth anniversary of Sahir, a commemorative stamp was issued in his honor.

2. His first published work was in 1945.

Sahir settled in Lahore in 1943. Two years later, he completed his first published work Talkhiyaan (Bitterness). He even edited numerous Urdu magazines and became a member of the Progressive Writers’ Association.

3. Sahir fled to India after Partition.

In 1949, he left Lahore and came to Delhi because he “missed his Hindu and Sikh friends” who had fled from Pakistan. He soon moved to Bombay. Gulzar and Urdu litterateur Krishan Chander were his neighbors. Sahir’s bungalow was named “Parchaiyaan” (Shadows), after one of his works. He lived there until his death.

4. Sahir remained a bachelor his entire life.

Sahir had two steady relationships- the first with poetess, novelist, and essayist Amrita Pritam and the other with singer and actress Sudha Malhotra. He, however, did not marry his entire life. Amrita included her love story with Sahir in her autobiography, “Rasidi Ticket” (Revenue Stamp). When Sudha came into his life, Amrita found solace in the companionship of renowned artist and writer Imroz.
Sahir was a favorite of filmmaker Yash Chopra. And Mohammad Rafi sang most of his compositions. These famous lines from his poems will trigger your memory. They might even teleport you to a world of love, dreams, and aspirations.
