Ranbir Kapoor, in a recent conversation, unveiled an interesting revelation about his co-star and on-screen father, Anil Kapoor, in the film Animal. Despite Anil’s general avoidance of playing paternal roles in films, the Barfi actor shared that Anil had expressed his desire to play his father even before the latter made his Bollywood debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya.

Speaking with Netflix India, Ranbir recalled the early days of his career and said, “When me and Sonam were doing Saawariya. I used to go to Sonam’s house a lot for rehearsals and we were working under Roshan Taneja. At that time Anil sir told me, ‘I never play fathers’ roles but I will play your father’s role.’ I remember when he was doing Dil Dhadakne Do, he used to talk to me so much.”

In the same conversation, Anil Kapoor added context to his decision to portray a father in Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do. He revealed that he agreed to the film because Ranbir was initially set to play the role of his son. However, the role eventually went to Ranveer Singh. Speaking about the same, Anil Kapoor said, “When I said yes to the film (Dil Dhadakne Do), you were doing it.”

Ranbir continued, “He used to be in the dilemma ‘Should I do or not?’ I remember when the promo came, 90 percent of the audience was like but he doesn’t look like a father, he looks like an elder brother. It’s because he has kept himself that way.”

Dil Dhadakne Do was earlier supposed to star Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in the role of Mehra siblings. Later, the roles were played by Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra.
