Indie music no longer considered niche: Papon

BDC News

Popular multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Papon says the emergence of social media has helped in acceptance of music of all genres, thereby helping indie music to enter the mainstream realm.
“Music for me means the freedom to express. I’m happy to be here in Indian music at this time. We are boldly embracing different genres and styles and formats in music today. And the most important thing is indie music and alternate genres are no longer considered niche,” Papon said in a statement.
“Thanks to social media, we have come about to accept, savour and appreciate different forms of music today. For an artiste like me, this is exciting, as I am able to boundlessly explore across genres — be mainstream and still retain the rustic, local flavour of my comfort genre,” added the Moh moh ke dhaage crooner.
The Assamese artiste, whose real name is Angaraag Mahanta, was recently in the capital for a concert with Lucky Ali and Sona Mohapatra. It was organised by Red FM’s RED LIVE.
