Karni Sena wants Padmavat renamed to Padwoman

BDC News

Mumbai, Jan 9 Padmavati, now presumably “Padmavat,” has been a topic of discussion ever since the film’s shoot started. From lead actor Deepika Padukone receiving death threats to rewards being announced on beheading director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film received a number of threats from political and religious organizations as they found the film’s content objectionable.
But now, after a long battle, the audience may get to watch the artwork of Bhansali soon. Central Board of Film Certification has made up its mind about clearing the film with a few modifications, one of which includes a change in the film’s title. The CBFC has suggested renaming the magnum opus, ‘Padmavat’.
However, Karni Sena refuses to relent on the release of “Padmavati” as “Padmavat.” In the latest compromise proposed by the Rajput Karni Sena; it wants it to be renamed to “Padwoman,” instead of “Padmavat.”  A Karni Sena spokesperson said that “Padmavat still represent the fictional story of our fictional Maharani Padmavati, written by 16th-century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The Padmavat and Padman are slated to be released on January 25th.  We want Padmavat to be renamed Padwoman to preserve the honor of Maharani from Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s Sufi poem.
Issuing an open compromise to filmmakers as well as the government, Sukdev Singh Gogamedi, national president of the Rajput Karni Sena, said the Central Board of Film Certification and the BJP government will be solely responsible for the ‘consequences’ that follow if it did not rename the “Padmavat” to “Padwoman.” Mr. Gogomedi said that, “let Padwoman and Padman clash on the big screen on January 25th, instead of our Maharani from Sufi poem.
