In 1976, Basu Chatterjee made a romantic comedy film called CHOTI SI BAAT revolving around a common introvert man Amol Palekar who secretly loves Vidya Sinha, but is unable to express his feelings for her and to make the matters worse, her friend Asrani enters the scene and Amol feels girls today needs a flirty handsome charming guy rather than a simple hardworking and innocent man.
After giving two blockbusters in a row, Aditya Chopra chose to make an unconventional love story of a simpleton Shahrukh Khan who loves and by accident, even is able to marry his dream girl Anushka Sharma but that is only a compromise they have made and Anushka is not happy with marriage . How SRK chooses different identity totally opposite to his simpleton persona and how he woos Anushka forms the crux of the story!
LOVE: The basic emotion of life that has changed a lot in today’s times. Boys feel that their simplicity and honesty is not required and is not enough to woo the girl they love. Girls love flirty, somewhat over smart, well dressed, mad kind of guys who attract them. The film actually explores the psyche of today’s generation where love has become only about looking handsome, knowing how to flirt, how to impress a girl etc.
I personally feel Aditya Chopra is himself very shy and simpleton in his real life so the character may be part of his own personality. It was released on 12 December 2008 . My brief analysis of the film.
Direction: Frankly I was not much happy with Mohabbatein as I felt it was too dragged movie with good unique thought. I just loved every confrontation scene of SRK and Bachchan in that movie only. But, with this film, Aditya Chopra again bounced back with mature direction though the film weakens somewhat during the unnecessary dance rehearsals sequences and over the top SRK but that was required to establish a character so is justified. It was heartwarming to see Aditya Chopra to attempt something unique like this and he succeeded as film was declared as a blockbuster.
Technical Aspects: Music by Salim Sulieman was superb. Each song was a hit. The music and songs perfectly gelled well with the flow of film. Story and screenplay by Aditya Chopra himself was good and few dialgiues are remembered even today . Aditya has a special talent to creating few everlasting dialogues for his films . Taani Partner ! became a rage . Cinematohgraphy by ever talented Ravi K Chandran was superb. Editing could have been crisper as film dragged somewhat post interval .
Performances: It is rumored that Sonam Kapoor was approavhed and thought over for the role which eventully was played by a newcomer then Anushka Sharma! She played her part very well bringing the right dilemma and beauty to the role. Vinay Pathak provided with ample laughs as SRK s friend. But it was SRK who is too impressive and other SRK who may sound very overacted! I feel that’s the beuty of the performance by SRK in this film! I personally loved the simpleton Suri then brat Raj who has all the qualities of wooing a girl with his childish and over the topo mannerisms. SRK played both the parts well.
Overall: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi actually gives a lesson that love is not related to outer looks and money only but it is more of taking care of loved one and being pure and simple . Simplcity and innocence is more important inn love.
