The bungalow was the first of its kind by the first superstar of Hindi films

For ages it was an important tourist attraction for fans from outside and within the city who paid a customary visit to the abode of late superstar Rajesh Khanna, with the hope of catching a glimpse of the screen icon of the ’60s and ’70s.

The prime sea-facing bungalow, Aashirwad, is being demolished by its new owner. The bungalow stands on Carter Road in suburban Bandra and the demolition work has been underway for the past two weeks now.

After Khanna’s death in 2012, his family sold off the bungalow for a reported sum of Rs 90 crore to Shashi Kiran Shetty, founder and chairman of AllCargo Logistics. Shetty has decided to build a new four-storeyed residence where he would stay with his family, sources said in an article in Mumbai Mirror.

This is the home Khanna shared with his wife Dimple Kapadia and had bought it from yesteryear star Rajendra Kumar in the late ’60s. Apparently, Kaka, as Khanna was fondly called, had expressed his desire to convert the bungalow into a museum after his death.
