On the morning of June 30, lakhs of people were taken by a painful shock when the young and and popular with just one film, Zaira Wasim announce her decision to quit films for good. She in a post said she was,”disassociation from the field” as it has subconsciously transitioned her “out of her imaan”.
The entire industry and especially those who had worked with her in “Dangal” could not take the shock lightly and some even wondered what could be the real reason for her to give up such a promising career at such a young age. Like Nitesh Tiwari who discovered and directed her in “Dangal” said, “ it came as a shock to me. This was unexpected, but it is her life and she has the right to lead it the way she wants.”
Zaira was zeroed on to play one of the key roles in “Dangal” by Nitesh Tiwari and producer-actor Aamir Khan. They were impressed by her talent, her looks and specially with her audition after which they didn’t have to look for any other actress to play the role of a young female wrestler. Her work in the film marked her out as a talent for the future. And the critics and the masses showed how much they agreed with them when the film was released and she was loved all over the country and even in China.
It was difficult for Zaira even though she began her career in the biggest hit of 2016,“Dangal”. She was accused of espousing the cause of the Indian state and going against the Kashmiris, by playing an Indian wrestler. She was also targetted for meeting the then chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir,Mehbooba Mufti.
Some time ago, she took to social media to reveal that she was battling depression. But no one could even guess that she was going through so much of trouble. She continued hoping for the best, especially after she had signed her second film, “The Sky Is Pink” and there were other offers coming her way.
But she has now put all that could have been a part of a glorious career into the past which she doesn’t want to return to.
This is perhaps the first case of an actress taking such a drastic decision. It is a subject that one and all should ponder on and make all efforts to find out what really went wrong with her and what or who were responsible for her decision. It is imperative that the truth be found out before other girls are forced to take such decisions and ruin their careers and their future and also harm the interest of the industry which is crying out for good talent to make good films based on good content.
The makers of her next, The Sky Is Pink, stood by Wasim’s decision. They issued a statement, that read, “Zaira is an exceptional artiste and we are lucky to have had her play Aisha Chaudhury in our film. She has been a complete professional all through the shoot. This is a purely personal decision, which she has taken after much thought and we will support her in every way, now and always.”
