Signature Event Brings Together Massachusetts Industry Leaders to Discuss Newly Conducted Public Opinion Poll and Impact of Trump Presidency on Local Economy
BOSTON, MA – The Novus Group today released the results of a new public opinion poll that surveyed Massachusetts residents about their views on current Trump policies and the controversial nature of theTrump Administration. The results of the poll were revealed during a signature symposium program jointly hosted by The University of Massachusetts Boston and Boston think tank The Novus Group on the First 100 Days of Trump at The University of Massachusetts Club in Boston. The event, moderated by WBZ-TV News Political Analyst Jon Keller, also brought together key Massachusetts industry leaders to discuss the impact of Trump’s presidency on local industries as well as the role of higher education in the Massachusetts economy.
“This is a significant marker for a new presidency and has been greatly scrutinized by voters, the press,
and other politicians ever since in July 1933 President Franklin D. Roosevelt promised to reach certain
goals in his first 100 days in office. Depending on whom you ask, the current administration has either
met its 100-day goals with flying colors or failed woefully. This survey and panel have provided
significant insight into the success of President Trump’s first 100 days,” said J. Keith Motley,
Chancellor of The University of Massachusetts Boston.
“We want to extend our deep thanks to all of our event participants. Our “100 Days” event was a huge
success and we are looking forward to hosting future events to highlight the intersection of public policy
and commerce. Special thanks goes to Umass Boston and Chancellor Motley for hosting and sponsoring
the event,” said Frank Perullo, CEO of The Novus Group.
“The poll we conducted highlights our state’s perceptions of key Trump Administration policies in
comparison to their sentiments on the current Administration. Polls like ours can hopefully help
Massachusetts policymakers, industry leaders, and academic institutions better understand how the Trump
administration impact is felt here at home,” said Paul Scapicchio, President of The Novus Group.
The poll conducted by the Novus Group surveyed 50,000 Massachusetts Voter File residents from the
Boston, South of Boston, North of Boston, Central MA and Western MA regions with attention to age,
gender and political party affiliation. The return respondent sample size of 414 portrays the significant
and complex impact Trump has had on Massachusetts industries and communities.
The poll results are based on live surveys of 414 Massachusetts voters and were conducted April 25-27,
2017 to both landline and cell phones. Results were weighted on gender, age, party affiliation and region.
The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.8% with a 95% level of confidence.
The symposium program discussion featured UMass Boston Chancellor J. Keith Motley, who
introduced members of the panel and discuss the importance of higher education on the Massachusetts
economy, Congressman Mike Capuano , Brookings Institute Fellow Aaron Klein , and Massachusetts
Health & Hospital Association President Lynn Nicholas who discussed how to navigate past, current,
and future decisions made by the Trump Administration.
Specific discussion topics focused on President Trump’s approach to infrastructure and what that means
for projects like the Green Line Extension; how President Trump’s approach to the Justice Department
will impact U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts; how the president’s immigration policies will impact
higher education, the Commonwealth’s workforce, and sanctuary cities; and what trade policy will
portend for Massachusetts’ burgeoning economy.
